Let’s Do Lunch, Senyak
My cousin, who has lived in and around Seattle for most of his life, spent much time as a communications specialist on large fishing boats. He had retired when this photo was taken. When I saw it, it made me smile! It was one of the most fun things I’ve painted, not only because of the subject matter, but also because of the connection to family.

The Bench – Episode 1, Senyak
A photographer went to the same area everyday for a few months, hanging out taking pictures. I used one of those photos, an old man sunning on a bench, as the reference for this painting.

Thinking this would be a good place to start, after a decision to paint more portraits, may have been a bit ambitious! Smooth skin, shiny hair, glasses, open mouth smile presented many challenges, but I was happy with the results.

My mother has always been an inspiration, not only for her many talents and capabilities but also for helping raise her four siblings after her dad died. In the reference photo used she was 14. I love it because of the gentleness of her pose and serene quality.
