My cousin, who has lived in and around Seattle for most of his life, spent much time as a communications specialist on large fishing boats. He had retired when this photo was taken. When I saw it, it made me smile! It was one of the most fun things I’ve painted, not only because of the subject matter, but also because of the connection to family.

A photographer went to the same area everyday for a few months, hanging out taking pictures. I used one of those photos, an old man sunning on a bench, as the reference for this painting.

Thinking this would be a good place to start, after a decision to paint more portraits, may have been a bit ambitious! Smooth skin, shiny hair, glasses, open mouth smile presented many challenges, but I was happy with the results.

Steve McCurry’s photo of a young girl taken during the war in Afghanistan became famous when it was featured on the cover of National Geographic. Haunted by eyes filled with pain and fear, I used this as a reference for my first oil painting.
